Trolling

- Productivity

- Connection

Trolling/Cyber-trolling

-When an individual/company is persistently targeted in a negative way online, usually through social media channels

- The number of social media platforms available has led to a proliferation in this, as has the fact that users enjoy a degree if anonymity when posting via social media sites

Case Study: Ariana Grande

- After she split with rapper boyfriend Mac Miller, and the latter died through a drug overdose, Grande was trolled online. As a result, she disabled her Instagram comments for a time

Cyber-bullying

- when an individual is targeted online through hurtful or threatening messages

- IPSO 2018 international survey, 20k+ surveys, 16-64 year olds

- Russia and Japan - parents have high levels of confidence their children haven't been cyber-bullied

- Indian, USA parents - highest level that cyberbullying is apparent to their children

- 47.7% parents (age 6-10) reported bullying, irl or online

- 59.9% parents (age 14-18) reported bullying, irl or online

- social media main source of cyberbullying

- 1/5 all bullying occurs on social media

- 69% teenagers own computers, phone and use social media

Body image, Connotations, and Interpretations

- filters and photoshop: users posting overly edited and manipulated images of their features set unrealistic expectations, and people compare themselves to something that isn't even real

- Eg: Kardashians caught posting edited body pictures, as they are very influential (Kim and Kylie Times most influential), their young fans idolise them, and want to be like them. They said on their show they don't edit their pictures, so their fans may think that because they don't look like the Kardashians, they are doing something wrong and their body is imperfect

- negative self worth from lives influencers portray (in which only positive stuff have been showed)

- some lenses blur out features or exaggerate them, reinforcing feelings of negativity about appearance

- photoshop easily accessible - facetune

Ariana Grande instagram

- Ariana Grande has 280M instagram followers

- the left image shows her promoting The Voice. Although she has not been paid to post this specifically, she is a judge on the programme, so if she gets more votes for her team she will get more publicity, leading to an increased profit

- the image on the right shows an image of her in a simple dress with a cardigan on top, standing in front of a plain wall. there is no caption but by posting this image, her fans and other instagram users stay reminded of her aesthetic and presence. It also reinforces her brand identity

backlashes against brands

- social media enables consumers to raise their opinions, eg by the comment section

- eg: Kimono, fans responded how the name could be racist, japanese users created hashtag KimOhNo, Kim had misappropriated an important part of their cultural heritage - brand changed to skims

- brands negative feedback through memes - parodying idea, behaviour or style spreads via social networks

Decreased productivity: social media and internet so accessible, productivity is reduced as workers are distracted. Posting about work can lead to disciplinary consequences or getting fired

loss of privacy: social media encourage users to share a lot about their personal lives - limits may be forgotten, potential employers can search for you on social media

a false sense sense of connection: social media makes it harder to distinguish between meaningful relationships irl and online
